India’s EV car sales double in a year as electric share hits 5 percent of total passenger vehicle market

India’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution is picking up pace faster than ever. According to data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway’s Vahan portal, electric cars now account for nearly 5 percent of all new passenger vehicle sales, almost doubling their share from around 2.7% a year ago. This milestone signals a turning point for India’s clean mobility ambitions and shows that EVs are steadily moving from niche to mainstream.

Between April 2024 and March 2025, close to 1,80,000 electric cars were sold across the country, up sharply from the previous year. The surge is being powered by growing consumer confidence, better charging infrastructure, and a wider range of affordable models now available from major automakers. Brands such as Tata Motors, MG Motor, Hyundai, and Mahindra have all contributed significantly to the growth, with Tata Motors alone holding more than 70 percent market share in the EV car segment.

The government’s push under schemes like the FAME incentive program and state-level subsidies has also played a key role. Many states including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi have introduced EV-friendly policies, offering registration waivers, tax cuts, and fast-charging infrastructure support. Together, these measures are making electric cars not only cleaner but also more economically attractive for Indian consumers.

Experts note that this growth momentum could strengthen further as newer models like Hyundai’s Creta EV, Mahindra’s BE series, and Maruti Suzuki’s eVX hit the roads over the next year. The expected entry of global brands such as Tesla and BYD into deeper segments may also fuel competition and innovation.

At 5 percent market share, India’s EV story is still in its early chapters, but it’s gaining momentum fast. With the government targeting 30 percent electric penetration by 2030, the current numbers suggest that the country’s transition to sustainable mobility is not just underway, it’s accelerating.
