PM E-Drive Scheme: India’s Big Push for EV Charging Infrastructure
The Indian government is making a strong push toward electric mobility with the PM E-Drive Scheme, aiming to install 72,300 EV charging stations by 2026. With a total allocation of ₹10,900 crore, this initiative is expected to support over 2.88 million electric vehicles and boost green transportation across the country.
Expanding Charging Infrastructure
To encourage EV adoption, ₹2,000 crore has been set aside for setting up charging stations in key locations, including major highways, urban centers, ports, and airports. This expansion will help solve “range anxiety,” a common concern among EV buyers, and make long-distance travel more convenient.
Boosting Public Transport & Commercial EVs
The scheme also focuses on electrifying public transport, with over 14,000 e-buses planned to reduce emissions in urban areas. Additionally, 205,000 commercial EVs, including e-3 wheelers, will be introduced in city transport networks by the end of FY 2026.
Nationwide Implementation
Several key highways have already been upgraded with EV charging stations under projects like the National Highway for EVs (NHEV). Delhi-Agra (Yamuna Expressway), Delhi-Jaipur (NH-48), and Chennai-Trichy (NH-179B) are among the major corridors benefiting from these upgrades. The Ministry of Power has also proposed electrification for 12 national corridors, ensuring widespread accessibility for EV users.

With the government targeting 30% EV adoption for new private vehicles by 2030, this scheme is a critical step toward reducing pollution and dependence on fossil fuels. As India builds a robust EV infrastructure, the future of sustainable transportation looks brighter than ever.
