Tamil Nadu partners with Relux Electric to roll out 500 new EV charging stations across the state

Tamil Nadu has taken a bold step toward expanding its electric mobility backbone by teaming up with Relux Electric and Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd (TNGECL) to develop around 500 new EV charging stations across the state. This initiative is designed to improve charger access in both cities and semi-urban areas, helping bridge gaps in the current EV network.

As part of this collaboration, the two parties will conduct a feasibility study to identify suitable land parcels, particularly government-owned properties, for establishing the charging infrastructure. The idea is to deploy these stations in spots that maximise utility for EV drivers near bus depots, public buildings, municipal zones, and along transport corridors..

Currently, Tamil Nadu already hosts around 1,300 EV charging stations. With the addition of 500 more, the state aims to further ease “range anxiety” for EV owners and make charging more accessible across its districts. To supplement this, authorities are also working on creating a digital map that will help users find nearby chargers more easily.

Relux’s managing director, Karthikeyan S, described the partnership as timely, saying it strengthens the state’s EV roadmap and accelerates the transition toward electric mobility. He emphasised that locating chargers in “customer-friendly locations” will be key to making them more usable and encouraging adoption.

While this expansion is promising, success will depend on the smooth execution of key elements, including ensuring reliable power, maintenance, interoperability, and integration with state and local urban planning. Still, this move reinforces Tamil Nadu’s ambition to become a leading hub for EV infrastructure in India.
