India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem is charging ahead. The country’s public EV charging infrastructure has seen rapid growth, expanding from around 5,500 charging stations in 2023 to over 23,000 by mid-2025. In just 15 months, more than 18,000 new charging points have been added, making EV ownership more convenient and reducing range anxiety.

As of early 2025, India had approximately 26,367 public charging points, reflecting a four- to fivefold increase since 2022. Despite this impressive leap, challenges remain. On average, there is still only one public charging station for every 235 EVs, a gap that highlights the urgent need for further scalability.

Government policies have played a key role in this progress. The PM E-DRIVE scheme has committed ₹2,000 crore for expanding public EV charging infrastructure through 2026. Meanwhile, supportive state regulations, streamlined approvals, and incentives under FAME-II have attracted significant public and private sector investment.

India’s progress shows strong intent to make EVs mainstream, but to sustain the momentum, charging infrastructure must expand in lockstep with rising adoption. The next few years will be crucial in bridging the demand-supply gap and ensuring EV users enjoy hassle-free mobility across the country.
