India crosses one million EV sales in FY25 as two wheelers and three wheelers lead the clean mobility shift

India has reached a new milestone in its electric vehicle journey with sales crossing the one million mark in FY25. Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel HD Kumaraswamy shared the numbers at the Auto Retail Conclave organised by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, highlighting how fast the country’s EV market is expanding.

The minister noted that electric two-wheelers grew by 21% while electric three-wheelers surged by 57% during the financial year. Together they form the backbone of India’s EV revolution, supported by rising consumer acceptance, improved charging infrastructure and government incentives.

Calling this transition a transformation of the automobile industry, Kumaraswamy said India is moving away from fossil fuel vehicles, not just for its domestic market but also with global aspirations. With EV sales now exceeding one million units annually, India has firmly placed itself among the fastest-growing EV markets worldwide.

Experts point out that the growth has been driven largely by affordable models and strong adoption in urban centres. At the same time, the rapid rise of electric three-wheelers has been crucial in the public transport and last-mile delivery space, making the EV shift more visible in everyday life.

Industry watchers believe that if this momentum continues, India could soon become one of the top EV markets globally in both scale and innovation. But sustaining growth will require more charging points, wider rural adoption and steady policy support to ensure the transition benefits every segment of society.
