Delhi Extends Electric Vehicle Policy to 2026 to Allow Time for Public Consultations on New Guidelines delhi policy

The Delhi government has extended its current Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy until March 31, 2026, or until a new policy is formally approved whichever comes first. This decision, confirmed at a recent Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, gives officials extra space to hold wide-ranging public consultations before updating the policy framework.

Over the extended period, stakeholders including citizens, industry experts, environmental groups, and private companies will be invited to share feedback. The focus will be on key areas such as boosting charging infrastructure, nearly doubling the current network, revising subsidies and incentive plans, ensuring safe e-waste and battery disposal, and defining clearer roles for both public and private players in building Delhi’s EV ecosystem.

Delhi’s original EV policy—launched in 2020—aims to reduce pollution and increase electric vehicle adoption. Though it expired in August 2023, it’s been repeatedly extended as the capital refines its vision. The upcoming draft, Empowered by stakeholder input, is expected to accelerate electric vehicle use and strengthen the city’s clean transport goals.

By extending the policy again, Delhi avoids any policy gap while ensuring the next version EV Policy 2.0 is shaped thoughtfully, inclusively, and with a focus on accessibility and sustainability. The government is urging active public participation to help design a policy built with people, not just for them.
