Andhra Pradesh to electrify entire APSRTC fleet under new E-Mobility Policy

The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is set to undergo a major transformation as the state government of Andhra Pradesh has directed the transport department to electrify its entire bus fleet under the recently adopted E-Mobility Policy. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has asked for a detailed roadmap, signalling the state’s intent to become a front-runner in clean public transport.

As part of this initiative, charging stations will be installed every 30 km along key corridors and more than 100 incubation centres will be set up to promote e-mobility startups. The state has also allocated a corpus of around ₹500 crore to support EV projects in urban areas and boost public transport electrification. Moreover, the policy emphasises building an integrated manufacturing ecosystem for EVs and components within the state, aligning with national clean mobility schemes.

The policy includes a target of 100 % electrification of the APSRTC fleet, along with establishing a dense charging network and a vehicle manufacturing value chain in the state. While the exact timeline for full fleet conversion has not been specified, earlier provisions of the policy had set similar targets for 2029.

This move has broad implications: it could reduce emissions, cut operating costs for public transport, and spur job creation in EV manufacturing and services. At the same time, successful execution will require overcoming infrastructure challenges, ensuring a consistent power supply, and coordinating with central agencies. If done well, Andhra Pradesh could emerge as a model for other states seeking to electrify public transport at scale.
